5 skills that EVERY real estate agent needs

Updated: Mar 12

If you're thinking about becoming a real estate agent, or you ARE one but feel like you're missing something, then this post is for you.

I'm going to go over the 5 essential skills that every real estate agent needs to be successful.

If there's one thing I've learned in my years of experience, it's that there are certain skills that you NEED to have in order to be successful in this industry.

Today, I'm going to go over those skills with you. So whether you're just starting out or feeling like you could use a little improvement, stick around...

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

The first necessary skill for a real estate agent is the ability to build relationships. This is by far the most important thing you can do as an agent.

Your job is to help people find their dream home, and in order to do that, you need to be able to connect with them on a personal level. You need to understand their needs and wants, and then find properties that match those desires. If you can't do this, you're not going to be successful as an agent.

NEGOTIATION

The second skill you need is the ability to negotiate. This is a close second to building relationships because without being able to negotiate, you're not going to get people the best possible deal on their home.

You need to be able to haggle with sellers, buyers, and even other agents and vendors, in order to get your clients the best price possible. This means you need to know what the common objections are and how to handle them.

MARKETING

The third skill is marketing. In order to succeed in real estate, you need to be able to market yourself and your properties well.

You need to know how to get people interested in what you're selling, and then how to close the deal. This means having a strong online presence, as well as offline marketing skills.

TIME MANAGEMENT

The fourth skill is time management. As a real estate agent, you're going to have a lot of balls in the air at any given time.

You need to be able to juggle multiple clients, properties, and deadlines without dropping the ball. This can be a challenge, but if you can master it, you'll be successful. Try schedule blocking, automation software, and maybe even hiring an extra hand to get you ahead.

LEARNING MENTATLITY

The fifth and final skill that I believe every real estate agent needs is the ability to continue learning. The real estate industry is constantly changing, and you need to be able to change with it.

This means keeping up with the latest trends, technologies, and regulations. It also means being willing to learn new things and try new things. If you're not willing to do this, you'll quickly become outdated and will struggle to succeed.

So those are the five skills that I believe every real estate agent needs in order to be successful. If you have these skills, you're well on your way to a successful career.
